Community is why Facebook supports Splice Beta

Anjali Kapoor is Director of News Partnerships in Asia Pacific at Facebook, which is the principal sponsor of Splice Beta 2020.

I love the excitement of Beta and am excited to see it go into its second year. The energy of this startup community is an inspiration for all in media.

Community is the cornerstone of conversation around news. People come together around news to be informed. It provides a place to debate issues and breaking news as it happens, and to reach out for help during disasters. I am particularly proud that we can support an effort that is committed to bringing new voices to the program and achieving gender balance in both delegate attendance and speakers on stage.

People who come together at Splice Beta represent so many different stories across this growing and dynamic region. News startups are using community to build and engage new audiences, go deeper on coverage, interact in real time, plus explore new revenue streams through events and in offering access to industry experts.

Asia’s startup media ecosystem reached a new level of innovation last year, as more founders identified opportunities with content and community in charting a new path to sustainable businesses. News organizations like Rappler in Philippines and Frontier in Myanmar have deepened their digital audiences by strategically building community around premium and membership-only content.

The people here at Splice Beta represent the diversity of robust startups being built across Asia-Pacific. It’s exciting to see Splice bring together journalists and founders to tackle new challenges and opportunities in the digital media space — and continue conversations on a chat app that offers support and advice to innovators in the region.

Facebook supports Splice Beta as part of our commitment to building a more sustainable future for news that connects people to quality, trusted, and local news that is important to them.

Thank you for welcoming us.
