How this works and why we’re doing it

Low-Res is our way of celebrating what people are doing in spite of Covid.

We'll do one every few weeks. They will focus on the challenges of covid, but even more so on your work in media, especially if you're launching new products or workflows, finding new ways to connect to your audiences, or figuring out new organisational pivots.

Let's find new opportunities in this time of Covid together.

Covid-19 has changed the way we work in media. It's a black swan movement that's opened the door to new audiences, and yet puts a large part of the industry at grave financial risk.

More media events are getting cancelled or postponed. This has a major impact on the network effects of the global media community. Think of all the opportunities lost in new relationships, projects, and knowledge.

What do we do about this? Simple: an online media community check-in! We're calling it Low-Res because it's a quick and dirty idea and we all know video conferences can be pretty fuzzy 😀

Who are we? We're Splice. It's nice to meet you.

Diversity in media

Our 5th Low-Res was about diversity in media. We spoke with Khabar Lahariya about how they think about it. Khabar Lahariya is a news organisation where women from remote villages of north India are trained to be professional journalists and produce local news in their languages.

We chatted with Kavita Devi, co-founder and editor of Khabar Lahariya and Disha Mullick, the CEO of Chambal Media, the company that runs Khabar Lahariya.

This one is about emergency funding for covid-affected newsrooms. What money is out there? And how do you ask for it? This is meant for newsrooms and journalists looking for financial support this year.

We spoke with Prue Clarke of the Judith Neilson Institute for Journalism and Ideas, Rasmus Kleis Nielsen of the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, Lars Bestle of International Media Support, Alex Fenby of Facebook, and Shuwei Fang of Open Society Foundations.

Freelancers

For our third Low-Res, we wanted to understand the covid-related challenges for freelancers — and the opportunities.

We spoke to Kirsten Han, Jeannette Goon, Norman Chella, and Erin Cook.

All four have done amazing work launching new products, workflows, and pitches in the past two months — good examples of finding new opportunities in this time of covid.
